Donald Trump’s presidential campaign has long passed the point of incredulity. The former host of The Apprentice has gone from a joke to the official frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination, having placed first in three out of four primary contests so far.

Jimmy Kimmel, it turns out, has the exact comparison in mind: The Producers. The 1968 Mel Brooks comedy famously featured two producers who try to revive their dying prospects by making a play about the rise of Adolf Hitler and betting against its success; unfortunately for them, the play succeeds wildly because people interpret it as satire.

In an exclusive sneak peek from Kimmel’s upcoming post-Oscars show, Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane reprise their lead roles from the 2005 remake. The clip finds them astonished to read newspaper stories about Trump’s continuing rise. Kimmel and sidekick Guillermo Rodriguez play their shoeshiners, explaining their supposed everyman appreciation for Trump: “I heard he’s a proven businessman who knows how to get things done” and (ironically, from Guillermo), “He will stand up to the Mexicans.”

“Where did we go right?” Lane wails.

Tune in Sunday night on ABC for the rest of Kimmel’s star-studded Oscars after-show.
