Sam Smith brought home the Oscar for Best Original Song, but Lady Gaga triumphed in the streaming world.
Her nominated song, “Til It Happens To You,” saw an enormous 1,689 percent increase of plays on Spotify, according to the service. Smith’s award-winning Spectre theme song, “Writing’s on the Wall,” grew 407 percent after hte ceremony.
The peak times occurred between midnight and 1 a.m. ET — the hour after the Oscars concluded — and were compared to the same period the prior day.
Smith, Gaga, and The Weeknd were the three of the five nominees who performed during Sunday’s ceremony. The 23-year-old Smith had a restrained performance, but Gaga’s was an emotional tour de force. Her song was penned for The Hunting Ground, a documentary that examined rape on American college campuses. Survivors of sexual assault appeared on stage halfway through the song and joined Gaga on stage.
